2 ¹These were the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun, ²Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

The Father Traces His Line Through Judah

³Judah's sons: Er, Onan, Shelah—three born to him by Shua's Canaanite daughter. Er, the firstborn, was evil in our Father's eyes, so he killed him. ⁴Tamar, Judah's daughter-in-law, bore him Perez and Zerah. Judah had five sons in all.

⁵The sons of Perez: Hezron and Hamul. ⁶The sons of Zerah: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Dara—five of them in all. ⁷Carmi's son: Achar, Israel's troubler, who broke faith over the devoted things. ^a a v7 Achar's name sounds like the word for "trouble" — the writer names him for the disaster he brought on Israel. ⁸The son of Ethan: Azariah.

⁹The sons born to Hezron: Jerahmeel, Ram, and Chelubai. ¹⁰Ram fathered Amminadab, and Amminadab fathered Nahshon, leader of the people of Judah. ¹¹Nahshon fathered Salma, and Salma fathered Boaz, ¹²Boaz fathered Obed, and Obed fathered Jesse. ¹³Jesse fathered Eliab his firstborn, Abinadab the second, Shimea the third, ¹⁴Nethanel the fourth, Raddai the fifth, ¹⁵Ozem the sixth, and David the seventh. ¹⁶Their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. Zeruiah's sons: Abishai, Joab, and Asahel—three. ¹⁷Abigail bore Amasa, and the father of Amasa was Jether the Ishmaelite.

¹⁸Caleb son of Hezron had children by his wife Azubah and by Jerioth; her sons were Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon. ¹⁹When Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrath, and she bore him Hur. ²⁰Hur fathered Uri, and Uri fathered Bezalel.

²¹Afterward Hezron had relations with the daughter of Machir the father of Gilead, marrying her at sixty; she bore him Segub. ²²Segub fathered Jair, who held twenty-three towns in the land of Gilead. ²³But Geshur and Aram took Havvoth-jair from them, plus Kenath and its villages—sixty towns. All these were sons of Machir, father of Gilead. ²⁴After Hezron died in Caleb-ephrathah, Abijah, Hezron's wife, bore him Ashhur, the father of Tekoa.

²⁵The sons of Jerahmeel, Hezron's firstborn: Ram his firstborn, then Bunah, Oren, Ozem, and Ahijah. ²⁶Jerahmeel had another wife, whose name was Atarah; she was the mother of Onam. ²⁷The sons of Ram, Jerahmeel's firstborn: Maaz, Jamin, and Eker. ²⁸The sons of Onam: Shammai and Jada. The sons of Shammai: Nadab and Abishur. ²⁹Abishur's wife was named Abihail, and she bore him Ahban and Molid. ³⁰The sons of Nadab: Seled and Appaim. Seled died without children. ³¹The son of Appaim: Ishi. The son of Ishi: Sheshan. The child of Sheshan: Ahlai. ³²The sons of Jada, Shammai's brother: Jether and Jonathan. Jether died without children. ³³The sons of Jonathan: Peleth and Zaza. These were the descendants of Jerahmeel. ³⁴Now Sheshan had no sons, only daughters. He had an Egyptian servant whose name was Jarha, ³⁵and Sheshan gave his daughter in marriage to Jarha his servant, and she bore him Attai. ³⁶Attai fathered Nathan, and Nathan fathered Zabad, ³⁷Zabad fathered Ephlal, and Ephlal fathered Obed, ³⁸Obed fathered Jehu, and Jehu fathered Azariah, ³⁹Azariah fathered Helez, and Helez fathered Eleasah, ⁴⁰Eleasah fathered Sismai, and Sismai fathered Shallum, ⁴¹Shallum fathered Jekamiah, and Jekamiah fathered Elishama.

⁴²Sons of Caleb, Jerahmeel's brother: Mesha his firstborn, father of Ziph; and the sons of Mareshah the father of Hebron. ⁴³The sons of Hebron: Korah, Tappuah, Rekem, and Shema. ⁴⁴Shema fathered Raham, the father of Jorkeam, and Rekem fathered Shammai. ⁴⁵The son of Shammai was Maon, and Maon was the father of Beth-zur. ⁴⁶Ephah, Caleb's concubine, bore Haran, Moza, and Gazez; and Haran fathered Gazez. ⁴⁷The sons of Jahdai: Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah, and Shaaph. ⁴⁸Maacah, Caleb's concubine, bore Sheber and Tirhanah. ⁴⁹She bore Shaaph, father of Madmannah, and Sheva, father of Machbenah and Gibea. Caleb's daughter was Achsah. ⁵⁰These were the descendants of Caleb. The sons of Hur, the firstborn of Ephrathah: Shobal the father of Kiriath-jearim, ⁵¹Salma the father of Bethlehem, and Hareph the father of Beth-gader. ⁵²Shobal the father of Kiriath-jearim had other sons: Haroeh, and half of the Menuhoth. ⁵³Kiriath-jearim's clans: Ithrites, Puthites, Shumathites, Mishraites—from them came the Zorathites and Eshtaolites. ⁵⁴The descendants of Salma: Bethlehem, the Netophathites, Atroth-beth-joab, half of the Manahathites, and the Zorites. ⁵⁵The scribe clans living at Jabez: Tirathites, Shimeathites, Sucathites—Kenites who came from Hammath, father of the house of Rechab.
