The Remnant Flees to Egypt
43 1 When Jeremiah finished speaking to all the people all the words of their Father—all the words their Father had sent him to speak to them 2 —Azariah son of Hoshaiah and Johanan son of Kareah and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah, "You are lying! Our Father did not send you to say, 'Do not go into Egypt to settle there.' 3 Rather, Baruch son of Neriah is inciting you against us, to hand us over to the Chaldeans, so they may put us to death or exile us to Babylon."
4 So Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces and all the people did not obey the voice of our Father, to remain in the land of Judah. 5 Instead, Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took the whole remnant of Judah who had returned from all the nations to which they had been scattered, to live in the land of Judah 6 —the men, the women, the children, the king's daughters, and every person whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of Shaphan, along with Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah. 7 So they went into the land of Egypt, for they did not obey the voice of our Father, and they came as far as Tahpanhes.
8 Then the word of our Father came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes: 9 "Take some large stones in your hand and bury them in the clay, in the brick pavement at the entrance to Pharaoh's palace in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah. 10 Then say to them: 'This is what the Father of heaven's armies, our Father of Israel, says: I am about to send for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, my servant, and I will set his throne above these stones that I have buried, and he will spread his royal canopy over them. 11 He will come and strike the land of Egypt, bringing death to those destined for death, captivity to those destined for captivity, and the sword to those destined for the sword. 12 I will kindle a fire in the temples of the gods of Egypt, and he will burn them and carry them off. He will wrap the land of Egypt around himself as a shepherd wraps his garment around himself, and he will leave Egypt unharmed. 13 He will shatter the sacred pillars of Heliopolis in the land of Egypt, and he will burn down the temples of the gods of Egypt.'" a a v13 Here "Beth-shemesh" ("house of the sun") is the Egyptian city the Greeks called Heliopolis, the center of Egypt's sun worship — not the town of the same name in Judah.
