Jonah 2

Book

Jonah in the Deep

From inside the fish Jonah prays like a drowned man, seaweed around his head and the earth's gates shut behind him, thanking our Father for bringing his life up from the pit. He vows to pay what he promised, and the fish spits him onto dry land.

Chapter 2.

Then Jonah prayed to our Father from inside the fish: In my distress I called to my Father, and he answered me; from the grave's belly I cried for help, and you heard my voice. You hurled me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the currents swirled around me; all your breakers and your waves swept over me. Then I said, 'I have been driven away from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.' The waters closed in over me to the point of death; the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. I sank down to the roots of the mountains; the earth shut its gates behind me forever. But you brought my life up from the pit, my Father. As my life was ebbing away, I remembered my Father, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple. Those who cling to worthless idols walk away from the love that could be theirs. But I will sacrifice to you with grateful praise; I will keep every vow I have made. Salvation belongs to our Father!

Then our Father spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out onto the dry land.
