The Father Defeats the Northern Kings
A northern coalition gathers with horses and chariots like sand on the seashore, and our Father beats it at the waters of Merom; the horses are hamstrung, the chariots burned. Hazor alone is burned. Then the long war ends, and the land has rest.
11 1When Jabin king of Hazor heard this, he sent word to Jobab king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph, 2and the northern kings: in the hill country, the Arabah south of Chinneroth, the lowland, and Dor's heights to the west; 3to the Canaanites east and west, the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, and Jebusites in the hill country, and the Hivites below Hermon in the land of Mizpah. 4They marched out with all their troops—an army vast as sand on the seashore—and very many horses and chariots. 5All these kings united and came to camp together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel.
6Our Father told Joshua, "Don't fear them, for by this time tomorrow I will give them all to Israel, dead. Hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire."
7Joshua and his army came against them suddenly at the waters of Merom and attacked them, 8and our Father gave them to Israel, who struck and pursued them as far as Greater Sidon and Misrephoth-maim, and eastward as far as the Valley of Mizpeh, leaving no survivor. 9Joshua did to them as our Father told him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire. 10At that time Joshua turned back, captured Hazor, and struck its king down with the sword, for Hazor had formerly been head of all these kingdoms. 11They struck everyone in it with the sword, destroying them completely; nothing that breathed was left, and Joshua burned Hazor itself with fire. 12Joshua captured all these kings' cities and all their kings, cut them down with the sword, devoting them to destruction, as Moses the servant of our Father commanded. 13Israel burned none of the cities sitting on their mounds, except Hazor alone—Joshua burned that one. 14Israel took all the plunder and livestock of these cities for themselves, but struck down every person by the sword until none were left breathing. 15As our Father commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and Joshua did it, leaving nothing undone of all our Father had commanded Moses.
16Joshua took all this land: the hill country, all the Negev, all the land of Goshen, the lowland, the Arabah, and Israel's hill country with its lowland. 17From Mount Halak, rising toward Seir, to Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon, he captured all their kings, struck them down, and killed them. 18Joshua waged war against all these kings for a long time. 19No city made peace with Israel except the Hivites in Gibeon; Israel took them all in battle. 20For our Father hardened their hearts to wage war against Israel, so they'd be devoted to destruction, shown no mercy, and wiped out—as our Father commanded Moses. 21At that time Joshua went and eliminated the Anakim from the hill country—Hebron, Debir, Anab—and from all the hill country of Judah and all the hill country of Israel, devoting them and their cities to destruction. 22No Anakim remained in Israelites' land; only in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod did some remain. 23So Joshua took the whole land, exactly as our Father had told Moses, and gave it to Israel as an inheritance by their tribal divisions. Then the land had rest from war.
