The Family Rebuilds the Wall Together

Chapter 3.

Then Eliashib the high priest set to work with his fellow priests and rebuilt the Sheep Gate. They consecrated it and set its doors in place; they consecrated it as far as the Tower of the Hundred and on to the Tower of Hananel. Next to them the men of Jericho built, and next to them Zaccur son of Imri built.

The Fish Gate was rebuilt by the sons of Hassenaah. They laid its beams and installed its doors, bolts, and bars. Next to them Meremoth son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz, made repairs. Next to them Meshullam son of Berechiah, the son of Meshezabel, made repairs. Next to them Zadok son of Baana made repairs. Next to them the Tekoites made repairs, but their nobles would not stoop to serve under their supervisors.

The Old Gate was repaired by Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah. They laid its beams and installed its doors, bolts, and bars. Next to them Melatiah the Gibeonite and Jadon the Meronothite — men of Gibeon and Mizpah — made repairs, the section belonging to the seat of the governor of the province Beyond the River. a a v7 The province Beyond the River was the Persian administrative region covering all lands west of the Euphrates River, including Judah. Next to him Uzziel son of Harhaiah, one of the goldsmiths, made repairs. Next to him Hananiah, one of the perfumers, made repairs. They restored Jerusalem as far as the Broad Wall. Next to them Rephaiah son of Hur, ruler of half the district of Jerusalem, made repairs. Next to them Jedaiah son of Harumaph made repairs opposite his house. Next to him Hattush son of Hashabneiah made repairs. Malkijah son of Harim and Hasshub son of Pahath-moab repaired another section and the Tower of the Ovens. Next to him Shallum son of Hallohesh, ruler of half the district of Jerusalem, made repairs — he and his daughters.

The Valley Gate was repaired by Hanun and the people of Zanoah. They rebuilt it and installed its doors, bolts, and bars, and they repaired about fifteen hundred feet of the wall as far as the Dung Gate.

The Dung Gate was repaired by Malkijah son of Rechab, ruler of the district of Beth-haccherem. He rebuilt it and installed its doors, bolts, and bars.

The Fountain Gate was repaired by Shallun son of Col-hozeh, ruler of the district of Mizpah. He rebuilt it, roofed it, and installed its doors, bolts, and bars. He also repaired the wall of the Pool of Siloam by the King's Garden, as far as the stairs that go down from the City of David. After him Nehemiah son of Azbuk, ruler of half the district of Beth-zur, made repairs as far as a point across from the tombs of David, and as far as the artificial pool and the House of the Mighty Men. After him the Levites made repairs: Rehum son of Bani. Next to him Hashabiah, ruler of half the district of Keilah, made repairs for his district. After him their fellow Levites made repairs: Binnui son of Henadad, ruler of half the district of Keilah. Next to him Ezer son of Jeshua, ruler of Mizpah, repaired another section, opposite the ascent to the armory at the Angle. After him Baruch son of Zabbai earnestly repaired another section, from the Angle to the entrance of the house of Eliashib the high priest. After him Meremoth son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz, repaired another section, from the entrance of Eliashib's house to the end of it. After him the priests from the surrounding plain made repairs. After them Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs opposite their house. After them Azariah son of Maaseiah, the son of Ananiah, made repairs beside his own house. After him Binnui son of Henadad repaired another section, from Azariah's house to the Angle and the corner. Palal son of Uzai made repairs opposite the Angle and the tower projecting from the upper palace of the king, by the court of the guard. After him Pedaiah son of Parosh. The temple servants living on the hill of Ophel made repairs as far as a point across from the Water Gate toward the east and the projecting tower. After them the Tekoites repaired another section, from a point across from the great projecting tower to the wall of Ophel.

Above the Horse Gate the priests made repairs, each one opposite his own house. After them Zadok son of Immer made repairs opposite his house. After him Shemaiah son of Shecaniah, keeper of the East Gate, made repairs. After him Hananiah son of Shelemiah, and Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another section. After them Meshullam son of Berechiah made repairs opposite his living quarters. After him Malkijah, one of the goldsmiths, made repairs as far as the house of the temple servants and the merchants, opposite the Inspection Gate, and to the upper room at the corner. And between the upper room at the corner and the Sheep Gate the goldsmiths and the merchants made repairs.
