Praying for All People
Paul asks first that prayer be made for everyone, kings included, since our Father wants all people saved and one mediator, Christ Jesus, gave himself for all. Then men are to pray without anger, and women to dress modestly, learn quietly, and not teach.
2 1First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be offered for all people, 2for kings and all in authority, so we may live peaceful, quiet lives in full godliness and dignity. 3This is good and pleasing to our Father, our Savior, 4who wants all people to be saved and to come to know the truth. 5For there is one Father, and one mediator between the Father and humanity, the man Christ Jesus, 6who gave himself as a ransom for all—the testimony given at the proper time. 7For this I was made a preacher and apostle—I'm telling the truth, not lying—a teacher of the nations in faith and truth. 8I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or argument.
9Likewise, women should dress properly, with modesty and self-control, not in braided hair, gold, pearls, or costly clothing, 10but with good works, as is right for women who profess reverence for our Father. 11A woman should learn quietly, in full submission. 12I don't allow a woman to teach or have authority over a man; instead, she should stay quiet. 13For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14And Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15But she will be saved through childbearing, if they remain in faith, love, holiness, with self-control. a a v15 The pronoun shifts from 'she' to 'they' — as in the original — likely referring to women generally who continue in these virtues.
