Our Father Has Spoken
1 1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, our Heavenly Father spoke to our ancestors through the prophets. 2 But in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of our Father's glory and the exact imprint of his nature, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. a a v3 "The Majesty on high" is a reverent title for God the Father, emphasizing his supreme greatness. 4 So he became as much greater than the angels as the name he has inherited is greater than theirs.
5 For to which of the angels did our Father ever say, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father "? Or again, "I will be his Father, and he will be my Son b b v5 Our Father here speaks the words of two Old Testament promises — Psalm 2 and the promise to David — and the New Testament shows they reach their fullness in Jesus, the eternal Son.
Far Above the Angels
6 And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, "Let all our Father's angels worship him.
7 Of the angels he says, "He makes his angels winds, and his servants flames of fire.
8 But about the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, and the scepter of righteousness is the scepter of your kingdom. c c v8 In this Old Testament quotation, our Father addresses the Son and calls him God — the Bible's clearest confession that the Son shares the Father's own divine identity. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore our Father, your Father, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your companions.
10 And, "In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. d d v10 The Father here addresses the Son as Lord, naming him as the one who laid the foundation of the earth. The Son's creative work, named in verse 2, is now named by the Father himself. 11 They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. 12 You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will never end.
13 But to which of the angels did our Father ever say, "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet
14 Are not all the angels ministering spirits sent out to serve those who will inherit salvation?
