Don't Drift Away
2 1 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it. 2 For since the message spoken through angels proved reliable, and every transgression and disobedience received its just penalty, 3 how will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was first announced by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard him, 4 while our Father also bore witness alongside them by signs and wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
The World to Come
5 For it was not to angels that our Father subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. 6 Someone has testified somewhere, "What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? 7 You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor, 8 putting everything in subjection under his feet." Now in subjecting everything to him, our Father left nothing outside his control. At present, however, we do not yet see everything subjected to him.
9 But we do see Jesus, who was made for a little while lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of our Father he might taste death for everyone.
10 For it was fitting that our Father, for whom and through whom all things exist, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through suffering as he brings many sons to glory. 11 For the one who makes holy and those who are made holy all share one Father. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, a a v11 Those Jesus makes holy share his Father — they are restored into the same family he eternally belongs to. He is not ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters. 12 saying, "I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters; in the midst of the assembly I will sing your praise."
13 And again, "I will put my trust in him." And again, "Here am I, and the children our Father has given me." b b v13 Jesus speaks these words from Isaiah's prophecy, presenting himself together with the children our Father has entrusted to him — one family, one Father. 14 Since, then, the children share in flesh and blood, he too shared in the same, so that through death he might break the power of the one who holds the power of death — that is, the devil 15 —and might set free all those who through fear of death had been held in slavery all their lives. 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but the descendants of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers and sisters in every way, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of our Father, to clear away the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. c c v18 Through Jesus, our Father entered our suffering — a safe place to run when weak.
