Jesus, Mighty to Save
63 1 Who is this coming from Edom, in crimson-stained garments from Bozrah, this one majestic in his apparel, striding in his great strength? "It is I — Jesus — proclaiming righteousness, mighty to save." a a v1 The apostle John saw Jesus, clothed in a robe dipped in blood, treading the winepress of his Father's wrath — Revelation 19:11-15. 2 Why is your apparel red, and your garments like one who treads in the winepress? 3 "I have trodden the winepress alone, and from the peoples no one was with me; I crushed them in my anger and trampled them in my wrath; their lifeblood splattered on my garments, and I stained all my apparel. 4 For the day of reckoning was in my heart, and the year of my redeemed had come. 5 I looked, but there was no one to help; I was appalled that no one upheld me; so my own arm brought me salvation, and my wrath upheld me. 6 I trampled the peoples in my anger; I made them drunk in my wrath, and I poured out their lifeblood on the ground."
I Will Recount Our Father's Love
7 I will tell of the covenant love of our Father, the praises of him, according to all that he has done for us, and the great goodness he has shown to the house of Israel, according to his compassion, according to his abundant covenant love. 8 For he said, "Surely they are my people, children who will not be false." And he became their Savior. 9 In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the messenger of his presence saved them; in his love and in his compassion he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old. 10 But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit; so he turned and became their enemy, and he himself fought against them. 11 Then he remembered the days of old, of Moses and his people. Where is he who brought them up out of the sea with the shepherds of his flock? Where is he who put his Holy Spirit within them, b b v11 'The shepherds of his flock' refers to Moses and the leaders who guided Israel out of Egypt. 12 who stretched out his glorious arm at the right hand of Moses, who divided the waters before them to make for himself an everlasting name, 13 who led them through the depths? Like a horse in the wilderness, they did not stumble. 14 Like livestock that go down into the valley, the Spirit of our Father gave them rest. So you led your people, to make for yourself a glorious name.
Look Down From Heaven
15 Look down from heaven and see, from your holy and glorious dwelling. Where are your zeal and your mighty deeds? The stirring of your heart and your compassion are held back from me. 16 For you are our Father, though Abraham does not know us and Israel does not acknowledge us; you are our Father; our Redeemer from ages past is your name. 17 Why, our Father, do you let us wander from your ways and harden our heart, so that we do not fear you? Return for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your heritage. 18 For a little while your holy people held possession; our enemies have trampled your sanctuary. c c v18 'Held possession' means Israel held the Promised Land with the temple standing; the verse mourns its loss. 19 We have become like those you have never ruled, like those not called by your name.
