The Road They Walked
Moses writes down every stage of the journey from Rameses to the plains of Moab, camp after camp, including where Aaron died. Then the command: cross the Jordan, drive out the inhabitants, destroy their images and high places, and divide the land by lot.
33 1These are the stages of the Israelites' journey out of Egypt, by their divisions under Moses and Aaron's hand. 2Moses wrote their starting points by stage, at our Father's command; these are their stages by starting points. 3They set out from Rameses on the fifteenth day of the first month, the day after Passover—the Israelites marched out boldly, in full view of all the Egyptians, 4while the Egyptians buried all their firstborn, whom our Father had struck down among them, and on their gods our Father executed judgments. 5The children of Israel set out from Rameses and camped at Succoth. 6They set out from Succoth and camped at Etham, which is on the edge of the wilderness. 7They left Etham, turned back to Pi-hahiroth, east of Baal-zephon, and camped before Migdol. 8They set out from before Hahiroth, crossed the sea into the wilderness, traveled three days through the wilderness of Etham, and camped at Marah. 9They left Marah and reached Elim, where twelve water springs and seventy palm trees stood; there they camped. 10They set out from Elim and camped by Yam Suph. a a v10 Yam Suph is the Hebrew name for the body of water commonly known as the Red Sea. 11They set out from Yam Suph and camped in the wilderness of Sin. 12They set out from the wilderness of Sin and camped at Dophkah. 13They set out from Dophkah and camped at Alush. 14They left Alush and camped at Rephidim, where the people had no water to drink. 15They set out from Rephidim and camped in the wilderness of Sinai. 16They set out from the wilderness of Sinai and camped at Kibroth-hattaavah. 17They set out from Kibroth-hattaavah and camped at Hazeroth. 18They set out from Hazeroth and camped at Rithmah. 19They set out from Rithmah and camped at Rimmon-perez. 20They set out from Rimmon-perez and camped at Libnah. 21They set out from Libnah and camped at Rissah. 22They set out from Rissah and camped at Kehelathah. 23They set out from Kehelathah and camped at Mount Shepher. 24They set out from Mount Shepher and camped at Haradah. 25They set out from Haradah and camped at Makheloth. 26They set out from Makheloth and camped at Tahath. 27They set out from Tahath and camped at Terah. 28They set out from Terah and camped at Mithkah. 29They set out from Mithkah and camped at Hashmonah. 30They set out from Hashmonah and camped at Moseroth. 31They set out from Moseroth and camped at Bene-jaakan. 32They set out from Bene-jaakan and camped at Hor-haggidgad. 33They set out from Hor-haggidgad and camped at Jotbathah. 34They set out from Jotbathah and camped at Abronah. 35They set out from Abronah and camped at Ezion-geber. 36They set out from Ezion-geber and camped in the wilderness of Zin, that is, Kadesh. 37They left Kadesh and camped at Mount Hor, on the edge of Edom's land. 38Aaron the priest climbed Mount Hor at our Father's command and died there in the fortieth year after the children of Israel left the land of Egypt, in the fifth month, on its first day. 39Aaron was 123 years old when he died on Mount Hor. 40The Canaanite king of Arad, living in the Negev of Canaan, heard the Israelites were coming. 41They set out from Mount Hor and camped at Zalmonah. 42They set out from Zalmonah and camped at Punon. 43They set out from Punon and camped at Oboth. 44They set out from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim, on the border of Moab. 45They set out from Iyim and camped at Dibon-gad. 46They set out from Dibon-gad and camped at Almon-diblathaim. 47They set out from Almon-diblathaim and camped in the mountains of Abarim, near Nebo. 48They left the mountains of Abarim and camped on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan at Jericho. 49They camped along the Jordan, from Beth-jeshimoth to Abel-shittim, on the plains of Moab.
50Our Father spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying:
51"Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan. 52Drive out everyone living in the land before you; destroy all their carved images and metal figures, and tear down all their high places. 53Possess the land and live in it, for I have given you the land to possess. 54Divide the land by lot among your clans—more land to larger clans, less to smaller ones. Wherever the lot falls for someone, that becomes theirs. You will inherit by your ancestral tribes.
55"But if you don't drive out the land's residents before you, those you leave will be barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides, troubling you in the land where you live. 56And then I will do to you what I had planned to do to them."
