The Father Restores the High Priest
3 1 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the messenger of our Father, and the Accuser standing at his right hand to accuse him.
2 And our Father said to the Accuser, "May he rebuke you, Accuser! May he who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this man not a burning stick snatched from the fire?" a a v2 The words "May the Lord rebuke you" are echoed in the New Testament, where the archangel Michael uses them against the devil rather than bringing his own charge (Jude 9).
3 Now Joshua was dressed in filthy garments as he stood before the messenger. 4 And he spoke to those standing before him, "Take the filthy garments off of him." Then he said to Joshua, "See, I have taken your guilt away from you, and I will clothe you with fine robes."
5 Then I said, "Let them put a clean turban on his head." So they put the clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments, while the messenger of our Father stood by.
6 Then the messenger of our Father solemnly charged Joshua:
7 "This is what our Father, the Father of heaven's armies, says: If you will walk in my ways and keep my requirements, then you will govern my house and oversee my courts, and I will give you a place among these who are standing here." 8 "Listen now, Joshua the high priest, you and your companions seated before you, for they are men who are a sign: I am about to bring my servant, the Branch — Jesus." b b v8 The Branch is one of the Old Testament's clearest names for the coming Messiah, fulfilled in Jesus, the Servant our Father sent (Jeremiah 23:5; Isaiah 11:1). 9 "For look at the stone I have set before Joshua: on that single stone are seven eyes. I am about to engrave its inscription, declares our Father, the Father of heaven's armies, and I will remove the guilt of this land in a single day." c c v9 The seven eyes on the stone represent God's complete, watchful care over the whole earth. 10 "In that day, declares our Father, the Father of heaven's armies, each of you will invite his neighbor to sit under his vine and under his fig tree."
