Genesis 13

13 ¹ So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him. ² Now Abram had become very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold. ³ From the Negev he traveled in stages to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been before, ⁴ and where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of our Father. ⁵ Now Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. ⁶ But the land could not support them living together, for their possessions were so great that they could not stay together. ⁷ And quarreling broke out between the herders of Abram's livestock and the herders of Lot's livestock. At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land. ⁸ So Abram said to Lot, "Please, let there be no quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are family." ⁹ Isn't the whole land before you? Please, let's part ways. If you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.

¹⁰ Lot looked up and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered everywhere, like the garden of our Father, like the land of Egypt. (This was before he destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) ¹¹ So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and journeyed eastward, and the two of them parted from each other. ¹² Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents as far as Sodom. ¹³ Now the people of Sodom were wicked, sinning greatly against our Father.

¹⁴ After Lot had parted from him, our Father said to Abram, "Look up from where you are, and look to the north and south, to the east and west. ¹⁵ For all the land that you see I will give to you and to your children forever. ¹⁶ I will make your children like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust of the earth, then your children too could be counted. ¹⁷ Get up and walk through the land, through its length and its breadth, for I am giving it to you."

¹⁸ So Abram moved his tents and went to live by the oaks of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to our Father. ^a a v18 Mamre was an area near Hebron where Abram later stayed.
