52 1 Wake up, wake up, put on your strength, Zion; put on your beautiful garments, Jerusalem, the holy city; for the uncircumcised and the unclean will never enter you again. 2 Shake yourself from the dust and arise; take your throne, Jerusalem; free yourself from the bonds around your neck, captive daughter of Zion.
3 For this is what our Father says: "You were sold for nothing, and you will be redeemed without money."
4 For this is what the Sovereign Father says: "At first my people went down to Egypt to live there as foreigners, and Assyria oppressed them for nothing."
5 "And now, what is this?" declares our Father, "seeing that my people are taken away for nothing? Their rulers wail," declares our Father, "and continually, all day long, my name is despised." 6 Therefore my people will know my name; therefore in that day they will know that it is I who speak; here I am.
7 How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the messenger who brings good news, who proclaims peace, who brings good news of good things, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, "Your Father reigns!" 8 Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices; together they shout for joy, for with their own eyes they will see our Father returning to Zion. 9 Burst into song together, you ruins of Jerusalem, for our Father has comforted his people; he has redeemed Jerusalem. 10 Our Father has bared his holy arm in the sight of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth will see the salvation of our Father. 11 Leave! Leave! Go out from there; touch no unclean thing; go out from among them; purify yourselves, you who carry the vessels of our Father. 12 For you will not go out in haste, nor will you flee; for our Father will go before you, and our Father will be your rear guard.
My Servant Jesus, Lifted High
13 See, my servant — Jesus — will act wisely; he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted. a a v13 The fourth Servant Song begins here and continues through chapter 53. The New Testament names Jesus as this suffering and exalted Servant in passage after passage — Matthew 8:17, Acts 8:32-35, 1 Peter 2:21-25. 14 Just as many were appalled at him — his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man, and his form beyond that of any human being — 15 so he will sprinkle many nations; kings will shut their mouths because of him. For what they were not told, they will see, and what they had not heard, they will understand. b b v15 "Sprinkle" follows the priestly purification sense of the original; some translations render this word as "startle."
