Psalms 40

Book

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

Chapter 40.

I waited patiently for our Father; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the thick mud; he set my feet on a rock, making my steps secure.

He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our Father. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in our Father. Blessed is the one who makes our Father his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who chase after lies.

Many, my Father, are the wonders you have done, and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you. If I were to declare and tell them, they would be too many to count. Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but you have opened my ears. Burnt offering and sin offering you did not require. Then I said, "Here I am, I have come — in the scroll of the book it is written of me."

I desire to do your will, my Father; your law is within my heart. I have proclaimed the good news of righteousness in the great assembly; I have not sealed my lips, my Father, as you know.

I have not hidden your righteousness within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation. I have not concealed your covenant love and your truth from the great assembly. Do not withhold your tender compassion from me, my Father; may your covenant love and your truth always preserve me.

For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails me. Please, my Father, deliver me; my Father, hurry and help me. Let all who seek to take my life be ashamed and humiliated; let those who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace.

Let those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" be appalled at their own shame. But let all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; let those who love your salvation always say, "Great is our Father!" As for me, I am poor and needy; may the Sovereign Father think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, my Father.
