Psalms 137

Book

Weeping by Babylon's Rivers

Chapter 137.

By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down and wept, when we remembered Zion. On the willows there we hung up our lyres. For there our captors demanded songs from us, and our tormentors called for joy, saying, "Sing us one of the songs of Zion!"

How can we sing our Father's song in a foreign land? If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its skill. Let my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth, if I do not remember you, if I do not set Jerusalem above my highest joy.

Remember, our Father, against the Edomites the day Jerusalem fell, how they said, "Tear it down! Tear it down! Down to its very foundations!" Daughter of Babylon, doomed to be destroyed, blessed is the one who repays you with what you have done to us! Blessed is the one who takes your little ones and dashes them against the rock! a a v9 Jesus took the cry for justice to the cross, praying, "Father, forgive them" — and taught his people to love their enemies. The honest rage of the exiles is brought to our Father, who alone can answer it.
