Psalms 46

Book

Our Refuge and Strength

For the director of music. Of the sons of Korah. According to Alamoth. A song.

Chapter 46.

Our Father is our refuge and strength, a help always near in times of trouble. So we will not fear, though the earth gives way and the mountains topple into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains quake at its surging. Selah.

There is a river whose streams bring joy to the city of our Father, the holy dwelling of the Most High. Our Father is within her; she will not be shaken. Our Father will help her at the break of dawn. Nations rage, kingdoms totter; he lifts his voice, and the earth melts away. The Father of heaven's armies is with us; the Father of Jacob is our fortress. Selah. a a v7 "The Father of heaven's armies" renders a Hebrew title for the commander of all heaven's hosts — the same Father who is the unshakable stronghold of his people.

Come, see the works of our Father, who has brought such devastation on the earth. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; he breaks the bow and snaps the spear, he burns the shields with fire.

"Be still, and know that I am the Father. I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth." b b v10 Other translations read "know that I am God"; FHB hears the Father revealing his own name, calling even the raging nations to cease striving and know him as Father.

The Father of heaven's armies is with us; the Father of Jacob is our fortress. Selah.
