Asaph Cries out in the Dark
For the director of music; according to Jeduthun. A psalm of Asaph.
77 1 I cry aloud to our Father; my voice rises to our Father, that he may hear me. 2 In the day of my trouble I sought the Sovereign Father; at night my hand was outstretched and would not tire; my soul refused to be comforted. 3 I remember our Father, and I groan; I meditate, and my spirit grows faint. Selah.
4 You held my eyelids open; I was troubled and could not speak. 5 I considered the days of old, the years long past. 6 I remembered my song in the night; I meditated with my heart, and my spirit searched: 7 "Will the Sovereign Father reject forever, and never again show favor? 8 Has his covenant love ceased forever? Has his promise come to an end for all generations? 9 Has our Father forgotten to be gracious? Has he in anger withheld his compassion? Selah.
10 Then I said, "This is my appeal: the years of the right hand of the Most High." a a v10 The appeal is to the past years when the Most High's mighty hand worked powerfully for his people. 11 I will remember the deeds of our Father; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. 12 I will meditate on all your work, and consider your mighty deeds. 13 Your way, our Father, is holy. What god is as great as our Father? 14 You are our Father who works wonders; you have made known your strength among the peoples. 15 With your arm you redeemed your people, the children of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.
16 The waters saw you, our Father; the waters saw you and writhed; indeed, the deeps trembled. 17 The clouds poured out water; the skies rang out with thunder; your arrows flashed on every side. 18 The sound of your thunder rolled through the whirlwind; your lightnings lit up the world; the earth trembled and shook. 19 Your way was through the sea, your path through the great waters; yet your footprints were unseen. 20 You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
